Yesterday was election day. Yippee!
I’m sitting in Sociology 101 and my professor asks “Do you guys ever wonder if your vote really counts?”, and just about everyone in class answered “Yes”. A lot of people also went to the extent of saying, “I don’t vote because my vote doesn’t count.” WHAT!? You didn’t vote!
Then I thought of what my boyfriend said yesterday night, “I wasn’t gonna vote, but then I thought about how excited YOU would be to vote”. (I really appreciate that babe).
Why is it that we think our vote doesn’t count? IT DOES COUNT! If we don’t vote we are letting somebody decide for us. We are not controlling our futures! That’s a really big thing. I feel like YOU are able to CONTROL your LIFE. Life should not, does not control you.
I personally am not able to vote because I am currently in “the process” of becoming an American Citizen. Mind you I have been here since I was 5 months old. I feel like an American, and I know no other home. This is my home. Voting is something that always hits me right where it hurts because I wish I was able to vote, I know my vote counts and that if I fight for what I believe in… Everything is possible. We have come such a long way so far in our history. Remember the days when only the Whites could vote? How about the times where women were not able to vote? Can you imagine?!? Currently, as long as you are 18 and an American citizen, YOUR VOTE COUNTS. If you cant go to your polling place, mail in your vote! In all complete honesty I feel like if you don’t vote you are just not ready to take over your life yet, you literally are letting somebody else take over those reigns.
This part, is directed for my generation. My people. The new voters. Anywhere from 18-22 or so year-olds, the young group you relate to. There is an aura of carelessness folks. Where is your passion for power? Go out and exercise your freedom, all of your freedoms. Freedom is a right, NOT a choice. Instead of spending hours in front of our t.v.’s watching Jersey Shore or Glee we should read or watch about things that matter, things that affect us, things that are going to make an impression. I want to set us free from these invisible chains and cages we have built up for no good reason. I want you all to fly, soar high.
Next time elections come around I want to push people buttons and be that crazy girl causing a ruckus in peoples minds because I’m out marching with some wise-ass sign out on Bear Valley Road.
And I will be :)
You are important,
every single one of you, get out of your shell and
go vote.
